BKG Launches Ethiopia’s First Large-Scale Electric Vehicle (EV) Manufacturing Facility in Debre Birhan

In a revolutionary step for Ethiopia’s automotive and environmental sectors, Belayneh Kinde Group (BKG) has officially opened the country’s first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in the growing industrial hub of Debre Birhan. This trailblazing project, with a total investment exceeding 3 billion Birr, aims to transform Ethiopia into a regional leader in green energy and transportation while supporting the global push toward sustainability.

The factory, strategically situated in the Amhara region, boasts an annual production capacity of over 1,000 EVs, including minibuses, cargo trucks, and luxurious coaster buses. Each vehicle is designed to meet international standards, combining high performance with low environmental impact. The venture is part of Ethiopia’s broader industrialization drive and efforts to curb reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Economic and Environmental Benefits:

  • Job Creation: Over 1,000 direct jobs have been created at the factory, along with numerous indirect employment opportunities for suppliers, logistics providers, and service industries.
  • Sustainable Transportation: Electric vehicles manufactured at the facility are expected to reduce air pollution and transportation costs across Ethiopia.
  • Regional Export Potential: In addition to serving the domestic market, BKG has announced plans to export EVs to other East African countries, reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a hub for green technology.

Belayneh Kinde’s Vision:
Speaking at the grand inauguration ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking government officials, environmental activists, and local community leaders, Belayneh Kinde, the founder of BKG, stressed the importance of integrating sustainability with industrial growth. “This facility is not just a factory; it’s a symbol of Ethiopia’s potential to lead Africa’s transition to green energy,” he said.

The project also focuses on innovation and eco-friendly practices, incorporating solar energy into factory operations and reducing waste production. As Ethiopia continues its journey toward modernization, the Debre Birhan EV factory stands as a beacon of progress and sustainability.
